When I was seven years old, we had an old player piano in our basement.  On top the the piano case were over a hundred piano rolls of every kind of music you could think of.  I used to spend hours sitting there holding on to the front rail, pumping, listening and singing to all the old songs, even placing my fingers on the keys and memorized a few so I could play them by myself.  My dad played the banjo and sometimes he would join me on the bench, and we'd play and sing together for what seemed like hours.  They were special moments in my life, and I'll cherish them forever.  From there, my love of music and piano just kept growing.  Through years of lessons, recitals, band practice, playing in twenty or so different groups, recording, it's always been a big part of my life.

LaRoge Music's Devotion to Alzheimer's Disease Treatment

A few years ago, my best friend's uncle was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.  He would talk to me about it's effect's, how fast things were changing, the toll it was taking on his wife and family, and how he would go for visits and feel so helpless.  Then one day he called and told me about his latest visit.  He said he decided to take his guitar with him and see if his uncle would have any response to a song or two from his youth.  We had played music together for years and we did some of the old standards and sing-a-longs back then.  He said when he started playing the older songs his uncle immediately came back from his blankness, started singing the song he was playing without missing a word or a beat, was smiling, laughing, like everything was just fine.  He played a few songs and when he stopped, his uncle just put his head down and went back into his world.

That phone call has changed my life.  I started reading about music therapy and its importance in the treatment of memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer's, depression, and so many other conditions.  I went back through my songbooks and lists and put together a collection of those old songs I loved in my youth; and started playing them again.  Now I play these songs at private parties, for church groups, nursing facilities and ALF's, and love every minute.

I'm always asked by the people that I play for if I have a CD or tape and have always answered "no".  Through their encouragement and help with selecting some of their favorites, I've put together that CD they have requested. And I'd like to offer it to you so you can enjoy some memories with me.

So relax and enjoy the incredible vocals and piano work of Roger Stenger as he leads you on A Sentimental Journey...sing and dance, laugh and take joy once again in all of those special places these songs will take you.
